This week at Bungie, the weather is changing…
You feel that? The slight chill in the air? It’s time to prepare for a colder climate, Guardians. Europa has no sympathy unprepared guests. You might want to come with a weapon or two, because frigid storms aren’t the only danger to be found here. Don’t be afraid, though. An old friend will be waiting for your arrival.

The weather may be brutal, but that won’t stop you from exploring this frontier. Take a look at the map of Europa, and be sure to check out our most recent weather forecast.

You now have less than seven weeks to get ready. Don’t get caught out in the cold without a plan. November 10 is coming quick, and we’re eager to see how long you survive.

It’s a Pass… for Games!

Earlier this week, Forsaken and Shadowkeep became available on Xbox Game Pass. With Beyond Light on the way, there’s no better time to gear up and get acquainted with what’s going on in the world of Destiny.

A few housekeeping notes for Guardians who are being freshly rez’d in the Cosmodrome:
  • You’ll need to download Destiny 2, Forsaken, and Shadowkeep to access this content.
    • Without Destiny 2, you can’t launch the game.
  • For new Guardians joining our ranks through Xbox Game Pass, we have a Help Article specifically for you.
    • Our help forums are also available at any time if you hit a snag on your way to the Tower.
  • If you encounter any issues accessing game content or Xbox related services, please refer to Xbox Support.
Eyes up, Guardians. Welcome to the community.

Ye Olde Banner of Iron

A few weeks back, we announced the extension of Season of Arrivals, noting that we’d be adding a few fun things between September 22 and the new November 10 launch date of Beyond Light. First, we featured some Double Ordeal loot on Lake of Shadows. This week, Drifter has been upping the ante with Triple Infamy. Next week, Lord Saladin returns with Triple Valor, themed weapons and armor, and his Pinnacle Power bounty rewards.
Don’t go in thinking it will be easy to snag some loot, though. Control is the name of the game, and Power is enabled. If you haven’t risen through the Pinnacle band yet, you may find yourself facing a raid boss or two on the other team.

There will be a few more weeks with increased rewards for Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit, so stay tuned for announcements!

Talking Tech – Preparing for Beyond Light

With Beyond Light on fast approach, it’s time to shift our TWAB gears a little. Today, we’ll be talking through some of the back-end changes that will be coming to Destiny 2 on November 10. To guide us through this process, we’re passing the mic to Destiny Engineering Director David Aldridge.
DAldridge: When Destiny 2 launched three years ago, we had no idea that in 2020 we’d announce a new trilogy of expansions (among other 2020 surprises we didn’t anticipate). At the time, we thought Destiny 2’s arc would look a lot more like Destiny 1 – a couple of expansions, and then a sequel.

We learned many lessons from the transition to Destiny 2, and from shipping Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken, the Year-2 Seasons, and Shadowkeep. When we evaluated those lessons, we decided not to pursue a Destiny 3, but instead to reinvest everything in Destiny 2 and make it all that it can be (check out our longer writeup on this choice here). To support that strategy, we’ve made several tech investments to help us sustainably evolve the game for years to come, and some of those investments are arriving in Beyond Light.
Many of these changes are under the hood and won’t affect your experience (except insofar as they help us deliver you more and better Destiny in the future), but some may result in neat improvements, curious behavior differences, or bugs. This means that, on November 10, some places and things will feel a little like Sliders (only 90s kids will get this), so we’d like to give you a rundown of some of the changes and possible side effects.
We shifted our mission scripting model to run on the Physics Host instead of the Mission Host (more details on this split here, in the interview with Matt Segur). In the long run this change will give designers options to create more novel mission mechanics by giving the mission scripting environment full access to the game state, instead of the much more limited access the Mission Host had. For example, the Physics Host knows exactly where enemy combatants are and what actions they recently performed – while the Mission Host only knew how many combatants were alive in a squad and what that squad was generally trying to accomplish. In Beyond Light we’re only launching the foundations of this system, and we look forward to evolving and leveraging it in the future.
  • What you might notice:
    • The new scripting environment changed many behaviors in complex ways, and you may see interesting behavior changes or bugs in pre-Beyond-Light missions (and public events, and similar) that were originally built and tested on the previous system. We’ve tested these missions heavily and stamped out many bugs, but some will undoubtedly slip through. We’ll be monitoring and fixing remaining bugs over time. In some cases, these issues were more severe – for example, they caused the Prophecy dungeon to be unavailable temporarily. We’re all excited for its triumphant return, slated for the end of this year!
    • One other cool new feature in this area is face-to-face joins in social spaces, so you can now fireteam up with Tower friends without a long Tower reload!
We revamped our content building and patching pipeline for speed and install size. With the tremendous size of Destiny, our complete shippable content builds were frequently taking north of 24 hours. We made investments to bring that down to sub-12 hours, which resulted in a bunch of changes to our content and patching formats. We also took on work to allow us to cull content that we’ve upgraded or replaced – our previous patching system had limited capabilities here (due to trying to minimize patch sizes and other constraints), and the current Destiny 2 install has a significant amount of accreted ‘dead’ content (e.g. assets in the base install that were replaced in later patches).
  • What you might notice:
    • Due to all these changes, Beyond Light will be a full re-download on all platforms – we know this will be painful for those with slower or metered internet connections, and we’re sorry about that. To help mitigate this, we’re planning to enable Beyond Light preloads sometime in the evening of November 9, Pacific Time, which should give everyone at least 10 hours to download before the gates open.
    • Destiny 2's install size shrinks by 30-40%: Due to a combination of culling unused or replaced content, install size optimizations, and moving some content to the Destiny Content Vault, Destiny 2’s install size will shrink to between 59 and 71GB (depending on platform), a reduction of 30 to 40%. These improvements should also help us control install size better in the coming years.
    • We hope to use these much faster builds to accomplish two things:
      • Help us ship mission-critical fixes faster when game-breaking bugs arise.
      • Reduce our overall ship pipeline depth, enabling us to work on Destiny releases closer to their ship dates, so we can react to fresher information about what’s happening in the live game. For example, historically each of our Seasons has had to get deep into production before the preceding season launched, preventing us from reacting to learnings from that preceding season. These tech improvements should give us 1-2 more weeks of flexibility on a Seasonal scale, helping us pivot more quickly in some cases.
We rebuilt our character face system. We know that how your Guardians look is important to you, and we’ve long wanted to add more player customization to Destiny. Our original system for player faces had some combinatoric content authoring problems – for example, every decal had to be authored completely custom for each player face permutation. This prevented us from extending this area of the game with more content and features. We’ve upgraded to a significantly more capable system (with e.g. runtime decal projection), which we hope to leverage for more player customization options in the future. As part of this process we reviewed the existing player models with our Diversity Committee and Employee Resource Groups in the studio to make small tweaks to existing player heads. We’re also building a list of Guardian face shapes we should bring to the game in the future in order to increase Guardian diversity in Destiny, with the long-term goal of enabling everyone to imagine themselves as their Guardian.
  • What you might notice:
    • Your Guardian’s face may look a bit different.
We relit portions of EDZ and Nessus. During the early stages of Beyond Light production the Lighting and Skies teams had a desire to provide a visual refresh to the two remaining D2 Year 1 destinations, EDZ and Nessus, as they enter their fourth year in rotation. To that end, the teams performed relights and global lighting updates to a number of locations on both destinations.
  • What you might notice:
    • Different lighting on existing destinations! The changes are intentional and are meant to bring the visual quality of these spaces up to our current lighting standards, while providing a fresh coat of paint for some of our Year 1 locations. We hope you enjoy these updates to some familiar locations when you explore EDZ and Nessus this November.
We’re excited to leverage these improvements to redouble our efforts on Destiny 2, and we aim to make Destiny 2 still feel like your home away from home.

Thanks,
-David Aldridge
P.S. Congratulations on making it to the end of this long and nerdy love letter. If your passion for all things Destiny Tech is not yet spent, you may enjoy the Reddit AMA that Destiny Engineering Manager Chris Kosanovich and I did a couple months ago!

Did You Say… More Emblems???

Beyond Light isn’t just bringing Europa to the fold. It’s also bringing many, many pieces of loot. This year, we’re refreshing a few Community emblems for you to hunt. Whether it be Fashion, Art, Movie of the Week, or the Bungie Bounty, we have some new swag to hopefully catch your eye. I’m personally giddy that we have seven total Community Emblems to show off. There’s just something about that number that we love so much…

Shadowkeep variants for each emblem will be available through November 10. There will be a few final chances to earn them before the new hotness becomes available. Stay tuned!
We’d also like to take a moment to celebrate our Community Volunteers. If you’ve ever visited the help forum, you may have noticed some members answering questions and linking players to general help articles and Bungie-authored troubleshooting methods. These are the Mentors, the “white gloves” of our community, dedicated to lending a helping hand to any player trying to get back into the game.
Our Moderators, however, are referred to as Ninjas. They work in the shadows, removing bad actors from our forums whenever the Code of Conduct is broken. You may see one every so often in the forums replying to threads, but their work is behind the scenes.
As of late, we’ve also been receiving some help from community moderators during Bungie livestreams. Whether they be Bungie Bounties, charity initiatives, or whatever reason we decide to broadcast, these individuals are helping to keep chat a bit cleaner. Join us in welcoming Shields to the fold of our community moderation teams.
Each volunteer group will be receiving a new emblem this year. While it might seem like a minor gesture, we hope that you join us in giving them thanks whenever you see these emblems in the wild.

If you’re wondering “How do I become a volunteer?”, our members are all community sourced. If we see you helping out in the forums frequently or just having a good time in chat while upholding our Code, we may reach out to see if you’d like to join up! That said, don’t do it for the emblem. Do it out of the kindness of your heart and for the betterment of our community. The emblem is just a little treat.

Did you credit any fellow creators who appeared in your video? Sweet! We’ll get your emblem to you within a few business days.
Did you make it this far? Always fun to have a meaty TWAB. I’ll spare you a long outro, but I do want to say this: Thanks for stopping by. We always appreciate those who tune in for the weekly conversation, whether we have a lot of new info, or just a simple check-in to see how everyone’s doing between content drops.

2020.09.15 14:36 good-toilet-paper I'm a fisherman, and I picked up a bottle in the net yesterday. There were a few rotten pages in it - pretty old and stiff paper, but crumbling all the same. Cuttlefish blood had been used for ink. With the years crossed out for reference, here is what they say.

16th February
We are now on an island, Jones and I.
Yesterday was horrible; the ship sank in the storm. I told the captain she would sink, but he didn’t listen to me! He urged her on, overconfident fool! And now, he’s taken them down with him. I shall never see Elizabeth again. Indeed, I was spared the painful vision of seeing her young, innocent face lying unmoving beneath the clear water. Although I do remember Tommy’s face, staring up at me through the thick tangle of seaweed, his hair crusted with the sea salt and one of his teeth missing.
With the help of Jones I moved his body beyond the sand dunes. I couldn’t bear to stand, but my stomach grumbled loudly. Jones was too weak to move. He has lost the will to survive. But I was always a survivor.
At four in the evening, Jones woke up. Meanwhile I found a seagull dashed against the rocks, with half its brain on the sand. Trying not to gag at the smell, I made a small fire with the matchbox in my waterproof. We have only sixteen matches left, and when they run out we must think of some way to make a fire. I speared the gull on a stray branch on which I had journeyed to the island. Jones nearly vomited after he smelt the uncooked bird. However, I managed to cook it. We cut it up with my broken penknife and ate it. To my deprived stomach, it tasted heavenly. Jones liked it too, but said he preferred chicken. We drank some water out of my canteen, but we have very little left and we do not want to waste it.
Tomorrow we are going to explore the island and try to build a signal fire.
17th February
I woke up sore all over and hungry again. Jones looked a little better, and we decided to have some breakfast (if it could be found) and then explore the island. However, we didn’t find anything eatable. We found splintered logs some distance beyond our fire, and placed them in a small hollow close by. I found some clothes, which we could wear or use as bedding. Jones had the good fortune to find a coil of tangled rope fifty meters long, an axe, and another matchbox which contains eighty matches. However they are no use if we don’t get food.
The island is not very large – a hundred meters across, and perhaps one hundred and fifty wide. We explored the island thoroughly today. The beach, by which I mean the area on which we washed up, is a thin strip of sand ten feet wide all around the island. Ahead, the soil gets loamy and eventually hard and dry. Three tall coconut trees are
close to the center of the island, so that’s the water problem solved. It will get pretty dull, having to knock down coconuts every time we thirst.
The land rises appreciably as you get closer to the center of the island. Situated at the perfect center is a large block of stone, set firmly in the ground. It is a cubical block a meter wide, and has a flat top. We couldn’t imagine the purpose of it, and left it alone. The block is surrounded by small, hardy trees, the variety you find in a desert. Towards the north side, the sand turns into rocks, which stretch out into the sea for about ten meters. It is a small spit about two meters wide, and ends irregularly. This is a good way to launch a boat, as the rocks are almost never covered by water. Now we only have to find a boat.
We didn’t find anything to eat today, but we knocked down three coconuts and drank the sweet water inside (having first made holes in them using my knife). The water was amazingly cool, and refreshed our parched throats. Then we knocked down two more coconuts for insurance.
After that, we debated what to do. Jones was all for using the splintered logs to make a raft and get off the island, until I raised the topic of food. We don’t actually have any. Judging by our approximate location when the ship floundered, we are 670 miles out from the coast of Africa, and around 2945 miles away from Antarctica. We could paddle against the current 589 miles to Madagascar, or we could go perpendicular to it and reach India, where we could return to Britain through a ship again.
We left that undecided, though, because we still aren’t fully fit. We haven’t got anything to eat now, and I’m starting to get worried. Jones looks unconcerned, but then he’s worried too.

18th February
Today, we first moved Tommy’s body away from us. With the help of the high tide, we pulled it around twenty yards away from our campsite. He was really starting to smell.
We found three dead fish at around eleven today. One had started to rot, so we left him alone. We cooked one and saved the other for later. It felt good to eat that roasted fish. It filled my stomach at least for the time being. We finished with a coconut each, and knocked down two more.
Later, we heard the noise of a plane zooming towards the site of the shipwreck. Jones and I screamed till we were hoarse. We also relit the smoldering embers of our fire, but the plane did not turn towards the island. Jones was disheartened to see it fly away again, but agreed that there was nothing more which we could have done. As night fell,
we just sat there on the beach, wondering how much can change in seventy two hours. I was on my way to become a successful doctor in Regent Street, with Jones’ consulting right in front of mine. I was married not two weeks ago – Jones was my best man, I had a beautiful wife, a loving family, money in the bank and my life stretched away in front of me. Now I’m all alone – stuck on a desert island, without any of the things I once held so dear. My wife is dead. For all I know, so is my family. I have nothing to go on for.
But I will fight. It is not in my nature to give up, and I won’t.

19th February
Jones was looking pretty bad today. He’s been feeling off-color ever since the plane flew away – so close, and yet so far. For breakfast, we ate the remaining fish, again with a coconut each. The sweet taste of the coconut water is getting to me. I need some fresh water – without any sugar in it. The sea was looking quite calm today, so we went for a swim. Not too deep, till about waist height. I didn’t want to find myself in a current and be pulled away from shore.
Clean and dripping wet, we returned to the beach. I don’t think I will ever forget that beach. The relentless sun beating down upon our necks, the sand dancing and glaring heat, with the salty water and the sweet coconuts…it is a wonder I can even write about it.
We did nothing the entire day. I have lost weight. Jones hasn’t changed much. I have a deep tan, and my once-muscular arms have started to sag. It is very hard not to think about eggs and bacon, or something of the kind. We must focus on getting out of this situation. We still have about eight stout logs remaining, the entire coil of rope and the axe. We could make a raft, or wait and see what happens tomorrow. It is very maddening, this helplessness.

19th February, 2.00 ante meridian
I’m in trouble.
Being trapped on this island alone would be a better situation than the one I’ve gotten myself into.
Yesterday night, I couldn’t sleep. The fire had almost burned out, and Jones was snoring contentedly. We sleep back-to-back, because the breeze from the other side of the island is too cold. We keep the fire ahead of us, and sleep perpendicular to it. As we don’t have a blanket, it is very cold and somehow frightful to sleep alone.
I woke at around two in the morning. I looked at the moon, and then I looked where Jones was sleeping.
He wasn’t there. I first thought it was a trick of the light – an optical illusion, if you will.
But he really was gone. The fire had almost burned out. I managed to get a log burning again, and with that for a light, I made my way across to the dune. That’s when I saw the lighted log. There was a large heap of sand to the left of it, and more sand was strewn around it. I started to walk forward, when suddenly light shone out of the hole in the ground. I immediately fell back to my earlier position among the dunes, and waited.
Jones clambered out of the hole. He had a look of crazed glee on his face. In one hand he held a lighted brand. And in the other – I made a small gagging sound in my throat.
Peter Jones was holding the arm of Tommy Sinclair.
The arm was barely covered. A torn sleeve over the brown skin and the limp muscles. The fingers were all awry, broken like sticks. I could see the fire dancing on the broken nails.
Jones threw the arm on the ground. Then he set up the fire. I watched in horror. Seeing my best friend turn into a cannibal was not something I would like to experience again. He went to the water and washed the arm carefully. Impaling it with a stick, he sat down with it held over the fire. The fingers of Tommy’s arm jerked and flopped pointlessly. I watched horrorstruck as he carefully pulled out the maggots and tossed them aside, where they wriggled in the sand. He roasted one side and ripped off the sleeve. Then he turned it around, pulled off a few more maggots and roasted the other side. He took out the knife, slashed the wrist into pieces and carefully put Tommy’s palm on the sand. At this point, I nearly vomited, but I managed to hold it together.
When I looked over the dune again, he was eating the arm with relish. It was nothing more or less – just pure relish. I watched as he pulled what seemed to be sinews and long white cords from the arm. He dug his teeth into it again, and the red blood ran down over it. He was chewing contentedly, like he was sitting in Barista and eating a steak that the waiter had just put in front of him. Suddenly he scowled. I almost fainted, thinking he had spotted me. But he just pulled out a bone – a metacarpal, I think – and threw it back in the pit. Then he took the knife and made a clean cut, almost like when we did in the dissecting rooms as young doctors-to-be. He pulled out the radius and the ulna, tossing them into the pit.
With a thrill of terror, I realized something else: This man was a professional at eating unknown meats. Clearly he had done it before. This made matters worse, for I thought he was desperate and too hungry. But it turns out that he actually enjoyed the taste of the iron-rich blood on his lips. At this point, I felt some curiosity. How much of the body had he actually eaten? Was it possible that he had been doing it everyday for now? That would explain his loss of appetite: he had not eaten the entire fish, but had given it to me.
I wanted my question answered. Making absolutely no noise, I smothered my torch in the sand and crept around the dune. I took cover in the brackish trees and approached Jones from the north, on all fours. Now he was sitting with his back to me. I had to hurry, for almost all the bones had been taken out and he would finish soon. I stealthily went to the pit.
Dear God of Nazareth…
Only the head, another arm, the entire torso and a leg were in the pit – the pit we had dug as a grave for our friend.
The rest were missing. A few bones – a femur, the patella and the tibia-fibula I recognized. I also recognized a half-eaten scapula. The other shoulder blade was missing.
Had Jones actually cut up and eaten his friend’s body?
I didn’t want to think too much about it. I was sure I would not be able to. Sleep would numb thought. As stealthily as I came, so I went. I carefully put my unlit torch back in the wood pile and tried to sleep, the cold wind blowing on my body.
Suddenly I heard wet feet on the sand beside me.
(He's coming for you run run get up)
I never even turned around as Jones returned to the dugout, his hand wet from the seawater resting for an instant on my shoulder.
As I tried to sleep, I had a sudden thought. It struck a chill to my bones.
What would Jones eat when the head and torso was over?
And more importantly: Would I be next?

20th February
Jones can’t know.
If he does, I’m certain to be next. If he doesn’t, I have a chance. Maybe we can escape from the island. Even five long weeks and three hours daily rowing seems easier than this. I proposed the plan to him today. He agreed to think about it, but there’s still the problem of food. We both know that without food, we would become weaker and weaker. Eventually our capacity to row would diminish, vanishing by the fourth day. Then we could only wait for a change of current to take us to Africa.
However, we haven’t actually done anything about it.
The only thing we’ve done is to collect more logs. We now have sixteen long logs, each about three meters long. We could try making a raft, because to make a boat we’d need a saw. The axe we have won’t do as we need to plane the edges of the boat. We still have fifty meters of rope remaining and sixty matches. With luck, we could make a six-by-six raft and carry at the most sixty coconuts on it along with ourselves. It seems a poor idea, but that’s all we’ve got at this point, so we’d better start. I’m not hungry, last night’s scenario replays in my head when Jones says food.
I ought to watch my back though.

21st February
We started work yesterday. It wasn’t easy, but we have made the frame of the raft. Jones had the bright idea of making a cage for the coconuts using the remaining wood. So today we are going to make the cage to make sure that the coconuts don’t go overboard. We are also making three-inch supports on either side on the off chance that we should roll into the sea while asleep.
I found nothing to eat today. Jones took a break while I was working, and came back with his hands behind his back. I asked him what he’d brought, and he said “Do you trust me?”
I nodded, although my mind said no.
He put his hands out. There was a tender lump of meat in his hands.
I felt some strange power steal over me. Eat it, said my hunger-riddled stomach. My brain replied with a snort and vehemently protested.
The only thing I did was to ask him where he’d got it.
He chose not to answer that. Instead he said “You say you trust me. If you really do, eat this. It will help you to regain strength. Believe me for the sake of our lifelong friendship.”
I could only stare at the horrible thing. But my stomach said “You must at least try. That may not be what you think it is. It may be a bird’s or a fish’s.”
And so I listened to my stomach.
I put my hand out.
And I chewed the lump.
The explosion of juices in my poor dried-out mouth was enough. I hungrily gobbled it up, not thinking too much. It felt rubbery, chewy and wet – almost like overcooked chicken. But it felt so good to eat. I could almost see my stomach – glad to be filled, regardless of the contents. I even licked my fingers to taste some more of that juice. I had never felt so completely full.
Jones was sitting on a rock. After seeing my expression, he said “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
I replied with a shake of my head.
“I need to tell you something.”
“Spare it. I know you ate parts of Tommy, there’s no point in telling me that. I saw you. But we’ve got to, now. We can’t afford not to, because who knows when we’ll get to see real food again? But swear on the life of your mother that if we get to land, or see loved ones again, word of this will not spread. I don’t want my friends and acquaintances thinking that I am a cannibal.”
During this speech, Jones’ face had changed from despair to slight hope.
“It's the need of the hour. Besides, it is also food. We know that the muscles of a chicken aren’t too different from a human’s. We are doctors.”
I did not agree with his third statement, but I agreed to eat it again – only when absolutely necessary. I would not eat it if I didn’t need it. Jones agreed.
I carried on with my work. As I tied the ropes of the raft around each log, hot bile rose in my throat. What had I done? I had eaten the flesh of my second closest friend. I had eaten another human being, for god’s sake. What has happened to me? I looked at my hands. Nothing had changed. My body was also all right. Except for eating human meat, I hadn’t changed.
With the utmost difficulty, I swallowed the bile down.
We should watch out, there are black clouds on the west horizon.
I slept much better tonight
23rd February, late night
We are doomed.
There was a storm. The raft – our half-built raft – was carried out to sea. The relentless surf, pounding on the sand, the waves – six feet tall – thrashed the entire beach. We felt so hopeless. Our only chance of escape was taken. We tried to save it. We tied the raft to one of the trees in the center, but the salty water and the wind frayed the rope. It finally snapped just before dawn. We had no choice but to huddle under what little cover the coconut trees provided, and watch our vehicle leaving without us. The cold wind buffeted and roared around – the rain falling hard enough to cause red spots on our skin. And cold, so cold. A cold which chilled our spirits with our bodies. Jones passed out when he saw the raft leaving. I only just caught him as he fell headfirst onto the wet sand.
The magnitude of our predicament is serious.
Tommy’s grave has been filled with water. The head, leg and torso have decayed. We have no more food left. There are only six coconuts. The rest got carried away to sea, or have fungus on them due to the dangerous humidity.
Jones cried today - though he hid it well, I knew exactly how he felt. The chance of safety and a try for our lives – replaced by the prospect of death. Death, on an island, with no one but the gulls to cry for us, it destroys my spirit.
26th February
We were out cold for three days. Our faces look sunken – totally devoid of energy. We desperately needed to eat, so we flipped a coin. I won.
Jones carefully washed his leg before he cut it off with the axe.

27th February
We finished off the remainder of the meat, and it was my turn.
I brought the axe down. Blood spurted out in torrents, dyeing the sand red. I screamed. A raw, guttural sound that tore my vocal cords. The pain… it seemed to rip my world apart, I wished for it to end, for death to claim me… for it to stop…

28th February
There is calm acceptance on our faces. We have long since felt that we would never escape. However that is no excuse for the stomach so here we are hehe.
We tossed again, and I lost.
As I held the axe, I recalled all the pain.
Without thinking too much about it, I cut off my second leg.

March
I have no idea of the date. I was knocked out by the pain. I have no legs. I crawl about, and Jones gives me water and our flesh to eat. My body ends in my upper thighs. They too are wrinkled and thin, devoid of flesh. Jones has one arm and one leg. He can hop about, but painfully. I am going insane from the pain!
March
Hehe I am a crab a skeleton crab with legs did you see the freak show at the circus last week i was in it
i forgot to tell you we had front tickets

I have only one hand left Jones has none that is unfair

On to the fingers now hey tree would you like a finger but this one’s mine none for you

2020.08.25 22:25 ThrowRAnewspouse My Ex doesn't know I'm in a relationship that I got into a week after we broke up. How do I tell them?

Hi guys, sorry for the seemingly stupid question but I really can't wrap my head around this and I thought some unbiased opinions might help. Some details have been changed for the sake of anonymity. Sorry for the length, I started venting early on and it felt like a weight lifted off my chest.
Around a year ago, I broke up with my partner at the time of around three years(Ex) due to emotional issues. I felt I couldn't confide or communicate my problems or any issue I was having with them without making their depression worse. It was horrible, I felt as though I was constantly walking on eggshells around Ex in fear of upsetting them. I lost sleep worrying about them and whether or not they were having anxiety attacks, they kept forgetting to take their medication, I was miserable and hopeless for the future because of listening to their depressed tangents about it, etc. There was no abuse(at least in my opinion), but the whole thing was an emotional sinkhole and I just couldn't communicate with them effectively to tell them to stop out of guilt of adding to their plate. I fully accept the responsibility of being unable to communicate with them and am working on it right now. Without going into too much dirty laundry about them or any real examples, I broke it off with the help of a mutual friend.
The breakup was amicable, even if tearful, and both of us agreed to mature on our own before seeing what the future holds for us and possibly trying again. At that point, I had still loved them, very much so and was willing to entertain the idea of getting back together. It took our mutual friend sitting me down and explaining to me how miserable I was for me to finally get it, so I can admit I'm a bit thick when it comes to the emotional side of things.
Now, during that time, Ex and I were still friends(and still are), and would talk to eachother regularly. But also our mutual friend(basically a childhood friend from 12y/o) was there for me as well because they were the one to see the emotional toll it all took on me. Long story cut very short, we were talking and figured out that both of us had repressed major crushes on eachother. Them longer than me but in my case, I had blamed it on being miserable in my current relationship and was petrified of cheating ever, even emotionally, so I repressed it and refused to even look at it.
I'm not necessarily proud of it because of how I usually pride myself with giving time and growing from relationships but, well, we got together very soon after my breakup(and I mean a literal week 'soon'. From now on I will call them my SO). I don't know if this could technically be considered a rebound since I was still working through my feelings for Ex but rebound or not, it has been a year and I have never been happier. I look forward to talking to them every single day and yes, we've had some bumps on the road but overall we are very communicative of our problems. We can tell when the other is upset and even when we fuck up, we talk it through and everything goes back to normal. I trust my SO with everything. We have been through several points where we were cut off from eachother and are still going so incredibly strongly. They treat me like gold and I do the same, they are genuinely the light of my life.
But Ex doesn't know. I have not told them out of fear of being ridiculed for going into a relationship so deep so quickly, because they've expressed that opinion several times before(and I had agreed up until it happened to me). I feel like a hypocrite but most of all, I fear losing their friendship because, dating or not, they're a great friend. Their depression hasn't gotten better either, in fact since quarantine it has only gotten worse. I let myself snap at them the other day for not listening to me when I was trying to help(another breakdown about the future, especially with COVID, these happen almost every day) and that relit all of these complicated feelings. They still ask for dates(which I have declined, lying that I'm not ready for a relationship yet), still call me cute and other compliments(I don't know how to tell them to stop because our friend group is just really affectionate and we do that all of the time), still cuddle with me and other friends, wrap their arm around me(previous reason), they still hope we'll get back together. I was already going to tell them to stop being physically affectionate the next time we meet up but that doesn't solve the rest of this mess. I haven't said I love you(platonically even, like I said, affectionate friend group) since the breakup, I haven't complimented them in any way that could be romantic. I just don't want to worsen their depression, or worse, even think about the fact that telling them might push them to hurt themselves or worse. What do I do here? I feel so torn between wanting to be happy with my SO, think of a future with them and being so miserable trying to work out the issues with my Ex. My SO(bless them, I love them so fucking much) is fully supportive of whatever choice I make here and thinks we can just "cross this bridge when we get to it" but it's eating me alive. Am I leading Ex on without realizing? Please just help me, I feel like I'm going insane and just want to move on from that point in my life without causing harm to Ex.

2020.08.16 07:02 bnggbngpopop I feel like I lost all my friends

I belong to a large group of music and art enthusiasts. It's technically a sub culture. We've all known each other for years and the community is large, but is relitively small when it comes to information spreading.
I had been having a tough time with my family relationships which caused me to be kicked out of my house, and my parents got a restraining order against me I violated the ro and ended up in jail for a month. At the time I was dating an old friend. We had only dated for 6 weeks before I went to jail but I had known him for 15yrs. After I got out of jail I drove to his house, cause he was (or I thought) the only person that would help me. He ended up denying our relationship, then spread all these horrible, awful rumors about me. He posted them on FB and really tried to ruin my life. The rumors were so grotesque that, had they been true, I would have gone to jail for many years.
It's been 3 months now, I have a new house and a great job. A few people have reached out to me to see if I am ok, but not many. The friends that I did have, I don't really want anything to do with, bc who wants friends that aren't there for you when you really need them. However, they're still in my circle, and I just ran into one of them at the store. It was awkward for me cause I know this person knows what happened and then heard all the rumors. While know this person wouldn't be one to believe them, it still was really embarrassing. Plus, I don't want a relationship with her even though I've known her fforreevverr. She noted thay I was driving a different car (my car was repossessed shortly went to jail), so that was embarrassing too, like proof I had been through the awful stuff I went through.
I'm just trying to manage all these emotions, build my life, and be happy. But at the same time, I'm lonely and I feel sad when I see everyone out with their friends. I feel like I lost all my friends.
I love myself, my relationship with my family is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better, and I know everything will be ok. But sometimes I feel so horrible about myself. Like I'm not wanted, or everyone thinks I'm that crazy girl.

2020.06.20 10:04 UrUnableToCan I'm like.. Really really bored.. Like bored Bored, bored supreme. Big bored. Bored grande, ultra bored

I'm not sick of life , I'm not trying to hint at being suicidal thankfully, I'm not depressed, I have a relitively normal life. I have things going on in my life . But I'm just bored. I used to game for fun. No matter what I play. Give it 10 min and my attention disappears.
I take breaks in watching movies because I get bored. I used to be obsessed with playing basketball but I can't do that anymore because of covid. Studying is boring. I used to workout but its boring. Talking with friends are cool and all but I get bored after talking for abit. I tried discovering new hobbies but they either seem too boring to start, or I get bored after hitting the first bump in the road.
I Was dating a girl which ended like, literally 15 hours ago, I didn't get bored of that atleast, I genuinly liked her, but I feel like I was bound to eventually get bored of that too making me incapable of dating. I eat out of boredome.
I don't like sleeping because the process of going to sleep is too boring, I just lie down with my thoughts. I'm bascially just existing im alive, but not living. Don't bother commenting, I'll probably get bored of reading too, I'm just writing this to kill my boredome. I have a bunch of unread texts, not because I don't wanna reply, I just feel like I'll get bored of reading em, sometimes I can take enthusiasm, but there's a limit to it in a day so once thats over. I sorta fade until the next day once I'm recharged. I wasn't always like this. It was a gradual process that started about a year ago. I'm already bored of typing, k cool bye

2020.06.17 11:47 OccultVolva A brief overview of types, tools, herbs, and ways to cleanse a space for ritual ceremonial from the Pagan past.

(posted this in pagan sub but thought you guys will like it too)
I cannot cover everything (all pagan religions, types or rites, or in depth links other than few wikis) and likely some mistakes in there, but since ‘smudging’ debate keeps popping up I thought it might be a good time to highlight some of the terms or types of scents and cleansing methods used in the past we can easily revive today for Paganaism. Ones that can be less problematic in terms for Indigenous cultural survival. A starting point for anyone who wants to add more variety to their practise than herb bundles alone or looking for the type of old words they can use. Or a starting point to research further for anyone looking to blog about the topics or these types of tools or rituals. Some of the below feature fire and smoke and some don't.
Ancient Greek/Hellenism
A thymiaterion (from Ancient Greek: θυμιατήριον from θυμιάειν thymiaein "to smoke"; plural thymiateria) is a type of censer or incense burner, used in the Mediterranean region since antiquity for spiritual and religious purposes and especially in religious ceremonies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thymiaterion
Thymiateria were used in antiquity to burn incense during religious rituals such as sacrifices or offerings to the gods. Carved from marble, this thymiaterion is composed of three parts: a stemmed foot, a deep receptacle, and a lid. The deep bowl, which could have held a large amount of costly incense, rests on the spreading tray-like top of the tall foot. The lip of the bowl is scored along the edges to suggest an organic plant pattern. The same pattern is repeated on the domed lid, which is decorated with small ridges and perforated at regular intervals to allow the scented smoke to escape. The top of the lid is flat and undecorated, but a separately-made finial may originally have been attached. The sharp-edged, angular form of the thymiaterion with its decorative ridges imitates metal vessels. Traces of red paint remain on the foot and lid suggesting that the vessel was originally brightly painted.

Herbs
The ancient Greeks used it in their baths and burnt it as incense in their temples, believing it was a source of courage. The spread of thyme throughout Europe was thought to be due to the Romans, as they used it to purify their rooms and to "give an aromatic flavour to cheese and liqueurs".[2] In the European Middle Ages, the herb was placed beneath pillows to aid sleep and ward off nightmares.[3] In this period, women also often gave knights and warriors gifts that included thyme leaves, as it was believed to bring courage to the bearer. Thyme was also used as incense and placed on coffins during funerals, as it was supposed to assure passage into the next life.[4]

Greece: the Latin name for mint, Mentha, comes from an ancient Greek myth. The story goes that a water nymph named Minthe had an affair with Hades, the god of the underworld. Hades’ wife, Persephone, was not happy about this and she used her powers to transform the water nymph into a low-growing plant that would be trampled by passersby. Hades could not undo the transformation, but he did give the plant a beautiful fragrance so that when Minthe was trampled, her true beauty would appear in the form of the aroma of mint.
In ancient Greece, mint was used in funerary rituals along with rosemary and other aromatic herbs. The use of mint in funerals and association with death and the afterlife probably had practical reasons and came about because the strong smell of the herb would cover up any decaying odor from the body of the deceased.

Kyphi
Kyphi is a compound incense that was used in Ancient Egypt for religious and medical purposes.
Kyphi is latinized from Greek κυ̑φι for Ancient Egyptian "kap-t", incense, from "kap", to perfume, to cense, to heat, to burn, to ignite.[1][2] The word root also exists in Indo-European languages, with a similar meaning, like in Sanskrit कपि (kapi) "incense", Greek καπνός "smoke", and Latin vapor.
The manufacture of kyphi involves blending and boiling the ingredients in sequence. According to Galen, the result was rolled into balls and placed on hot coals to give a perfumed smoke; it was also drunk as a medicine for liver and lung ailments.[7]
See wiki for full ingredients
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyphi
There is also a type of incense known as jb (referred to on the Stele of Sekerkhabau from Saqqara). The name was written using the hieroglyph for kid (a young male goat) leading some to suggest that it was based on musk. According to Plutarch the Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense in the morning, myrrh at midday and Kyphi (Kapet) in the evening. In addition certain gods were associated with specific types of incense (for example, Hathor was strongly associated with myrrh) and certain types of incense were used for specific ceremonies.
Incense ingredients were either ground and thrown on hot coals or mixed with dried fruit (such as raisins or dates) and formed into small pellets to be burned.

Mesopotamia/Babylonia
The experience of aromatic oils was not just for the Gods, it was felt by the people in and around the spaces where they were burned. This was particularly true within Assyrian culture in northern Mesopotamia. Kiersten Neumann, a Curator and Research Associate at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, discussed the raw materials connected to aromatics within Assyrian temples: cedar, cypress, juniper, boxwood and fir (terebinth). Service to the gods was performed by elite personnel within the temple. The Arabian peninsula was the principle place to acquire these spices and incenses. Arabic caravans used camels that traveled along a set trade route that then sold these precious substances to those who wished to burn them.

Takpirtu
Takpirtu or Takpertu, inscribed tak-pir-tú and as a gloss to the term šu-gur-gur-meš, and literally meaning “wiping,” from kupurru,[1] “to wipe, rub,” or more generally ““to perform a wiping rite,” were Mesopotamian purification rituals whose oldest attestations go back to the Old Babylonian period. It was an integral part of the Bīt rimki and Bīt salā’ mê rituals and may have been a cleansing rite in its own right as it is listed separately in the Exorcists Manual, perhaps in the form of tak-pir-tú nussētiq, burnt offerings.[2]
Its earliest appearance seems to have been at Mari. Middle Babylonian attestation comes in the form of two references to the supply of grain or flour for the ceremony in temple administrative tablets from Kassite Nippur.[3] In later neo-Assyrian and neo-Babylonian periods it was used for the spiritual cleansing of a field or a building, especially in the temple of the moon god Sîn in Uruk, but also in the context of a person, such as a sick person or the king, a type of cleansing ceremony was accompanied by a liḫšu, whispered prayer, “By the life of Anu and Enlil they are conjured,”[4] or conjuration, "butting evil." Dough was wiped over the thigh of the subject, a scapegoat was sacrificed or carcass of a sheep was used to purify the cella of the temple,[5] which was afterwards cast into the river along with the zisurrû, “magic circle of flour,” and garakku-brazier, a black and white cord.[6]

Mîs-pî
Mîs-pî, inscribed KA-LUḪ.Ù.DA and meaning “washing of the mouth,” is an ancient Mesopotamian ritual and incantation series for the cultic induction or vivification of a newly manufactured divine idol. It involved around eleven stages: in the city, countryside and temple, the workshop, a procession to the river, then beside the river bank, a procession to the orchard, in reed huts and tents in the circle of the orchard, to the gate of the temple, the niche of the sanctuary and finally, at the quay of the Apsû, accompanied by invocations to the nine great gods, the nine patron gods of craftsmen, and assorted astrological bodies
The rituals are for the consecration of a cultic image, a statue formed from a wooden core encased in gold and/or silver, decorated with inlaid precious stones, and dressed in robes. They involve the “washing of the mouth” (mîs-pî proper) on the first day to cleanse the statue of all traces of human contamination in the production of the idol, and the “opening of the mouth” (inscribed KA.DUḪ.Ù.DA, Akkadian: pit pî) performed with syrup, ghee, cedar and cypress on the second to bring it to life, sacraments which may be related to the pit uzni, “ear-opening” ceremony. “On this day be present: for this statue which stands before you ceremoniously grant him the destiny that his mouth may eat, that his ears might hear.”[3] The rituals facilitated the idol taking on the persona of the deity, awakening the supernatural force within it, and enabling it to see, act, eat and drink the offerings and smell the incense:[4] ṣalmu annû ina la pīt pî qutrinna ul iṣṣin akala ul ikkal mêul išatti, “this statue cannot smell incense without the “Opening of the Mouth” ceremony, it cannot eat food nor drink water.”[3] Four exemplars from Hellenic Uruk do not include the pit pî stage, but instead introduce a burnt offering of a brushwood fire, lamentations recited by a kalû-priest and the presence of the monarch. Its application seems to have spread to encompass other objects, such as a ceremonial torch, the hide of a bull which is to cover a lilissu- or kettledrum,[5] the apotropaic figurines used in the Šēp lemutti ritual, the divinatory bag of the barû-priest, the mouth of the river to abate its torrent, and even the jewels adorning a king’s chariot. It seems that the process of mouth-washing was intended to prepare a person or thing for contact with the divine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%AEs-p%C3%AE
Pagan Heathen and Old English
To hallow is "to make holy or sacred, to sanctify or consecrate, to venerate".[1] The adjective form hallowed, as used in The Lord's Prayer, means holy, consecrated, sacred, or revered.[2] The noun form hallow, as used in Hallowtide, is a synonym of the word saint.[3][4][5]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallow
The noun is from the Old English adjective hālig, nominalised as se hālga "the holy man". The Gothic word for "holy" is either hailags or weihaba, weihs. "To hold as holy" or "to become holy" is weihnan, "to make holy, to sanctify" is weihan. Holiness or sanctification is weihiþa. Old English, like Gothic, had a second term of similar meaning, wēoh "holy", with a substantive wīh or wīg, Old High German wīh or wīhi (Middle High German wîhe, Modern German Weihe). The Nordendorf fibula has wigiþonar, interpreted as wīgi-þonar "holy Donar" or "sacred to Donar". Old Norse vé is a type of shrine. The weihs group is cognate to Latin victima, an animal dedicated to the gods and destined to be sacrificed.
Fire in general used to hallow or sanctify an area
In Eyrbyggja saga (bit not in Landnamabok) it is recorded Poroflr carried fire round the land he claimed. This ritual was probably also performed in order to sanctify his new homeland. It is possible that this land was related in one or another sense to the Hof building. This may be supported by other Old Norse texts.

The saga begins with Gotland being discovered by a man named Þieluar (Tjalve) (Gutnish: Tjelvar). He was a mythical figure who shows up twice in the Prose Edda and once in Gutasaga. Gotland is under a spell and under water during the day and out of water only during the night, a spell that is broken by Þieluar lighting a fire on the Island. Þieluar's son Hafþi (Havde) and his wife Vitastjerna (Gutnish: Hwitastierna) had three sons named Graip, Gute and Gunfjaun, the ancestors of the Gutes. After Havde's and Vitastjerna's first night together, she had a dream about three snakes entwined in her bosom. This was interpreted as a symbol that all things are connected in circles and that they would have three sons. The subject is depicted on some of the picture stones on Gotland.

Reek From Middle English rek, reke (“smoke”), from Old English rēc, rīec, from Proto-Germanic *raukiz (compare West Frisian reek, riik, Dutch rook, Low German Röök, German Rauch, Danish røg, Norwegian Bokmål røyk), from Proto-Indo-European *rowgi- (compare Lithuanian rū̃kti (“to smoke”), rū̃kas (“smoke, fog”), Albanian regj (“to tan”)).[1] https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/reek
and
however, a term with old english roots that conveys the proper meaning of smoke cleansing in witchcraft: rēcan. pronounced similarly to the modern word “reek,” the term rēcan means: “to fumigate, expose to smoke, cause to emit smoke, or burn as incense.” closely related, the old english word rēocan means: “to emit vapor, steam, or smoke.” the term later evolved into the middle english word reken, meaning “to emit smoke.” while the word was not exclusively used to refer to foul smells, it lost much of its original meaning as it evolved into the modern day “reek,” which is now associated only with unpleasant stenches. given its old english roots and lackluster definition, the term rēcan makes an eloquent and appropriate moniker for the smoke cleansing performed in non-native practices of witchcraft and paganism.

Nine Herb Charm (herb ideas)
The "Nine Herbs Charm" is an Old English charm recorded in the tenth-century CE[1] Anglo-Saxon medical compilation known as Lacnunga, which survives on in the manuscript London, British Library, Harley 585.[2] The charm is intended for the treatment of poisoning and infection by a preparation of nine herbs. The numbers nine and three, significant in Germanic paganism and later Germanic folklore, are mentioned frequently within the charm.[2] The poem contains references to Christian and English Pagan elements, including a mention of the major Germanic god Woden.

Apple Wassail old rites but later by ancient standards for blessing crops and trees
The Apple Wassail is a traditional form of wassailing practiced in the cider orchards of southern England during the winter. There are many well recorded instances of the Apple Wassail in the early modern period. The first recorded mention was at Fordwich, Kent, in 1585, by which time groups of young men would go between orchards performing the rite for a reward. The practice was sometimes referred to as "howling". On Twelfth Night, men would go with their wassail bowl into the orchard and go about the trees. Slices of bread or toast were laid at the roots and sometimes tied to branches. Cider was also poured over the tree roots. The ceremony is said to "bless" the trees to produce a good crop in the forthcoming season. Among the most famous wassail ceremonies are those in Whimple, Devon and Carhampton, Somerset, both on 17 January.

Celtic/Gaelic
Saining
Saining is a Scots word for blessing, protecting or consecrating.[1] Sain is cognate with the Irish and Scottish Gaelic seun and sian and the Old Irish sén - "a protective charm."[2][3][4]
Traditional saining rites may involve water that has been blessed in some fashion, or the smoke from burning juniper, accompanied by spoken prayers or poetry.[2][3] Saining can also refer to less formal customs like making religious signs to protect against evil, such as the sign of the cross. In Shetland, the Scottish folklorist F. Marian McNeil refers to the custom of making the sign of Thor's hammer to sain the goblet that was passed around at New Year's celebrations.[5]
An old Hogmanay (New Year's) custom in the Highlands of Scotland, which has survived to a small extent and seen some degree of revival, is to celebrate Hogmanay with the saining of the household and livestock. Early on New Year's morning, householders drink and then sprinkle 'magic water' from 'a dead and living ford' around the house (a 'dead and living ford' refers to a river ford that is routinely crossed by both the living and the dead). After the sprinkling of the water in every room, on the beds and all the inhabitants, the house is sealed up tight and branches of juniper are set on fire and carried throughout the house and byre. The juniper smoke is allowed to thoroughly fumigate the buildings until it causes sneezing and coughing among the inhabitants. Then all the doors and windows are flung open to let in the cold, fresh air of the new year. The woman of the house then administers 'a restorative' from the whisky bottle, and the household sits down to its New Year breakfast.[6] Saining with juniper was also used in healing rites, where the evil eye was suspected to be the cause of the illness, but it apparently fell out of use by the end of the nineteenth century after a young girl with respiratory problems suffocated due to the amount of smoke that filled the house.[7]
Saining is a common practice in modern traditions based on Scottish folklore, such as blessing and protecting children and other family members.[2][3] While many of the surviving saining prayers and charms are Christian in nature,[2][3] others that focus on the powers of nature are used as part of Gaelic Polytheist ceremonies.[8][9]

Smàladh – Smooring the Hearth Fire
Each household would have a hearth fire over which all the household food would be prepared, and around which the most important aspects of family life would happen. The hearth fire would traditionally have been kept alight all year long in both Scotland and Ireland, with the exception of Bealltainn eve when it was extinguished and then relit from a flame brought from a communal bonfire to ensure health and prosperity upon the household in the coming year.1 It was a matter of pride and superstition not to let the flame die out even in the height of summer, and many households could boast that their hearth had remained alight for several generations – even centuries. If the fire did die out, it was said “the soul goes out of the people of the house.”2
Smooring, therefore – a Scots word usually translated as ‘smothering,’ but perhaps more accurately ‘subduing’3 – was a process by which the fire was dampened down so it would not need tending, and therefore could be left safely alight during the night. In Ireland, it was said that the Good Folk would be displeased if they arrived at a house during the night to find that there was no fire for them.4 In Ireland, a charm such as this was said as the fire was covered with the ashes: “Coiglim an tine seo mar choigleann Críost cáidh; Muire ar mhullach an tí, agus Bríd ina lár; An t-ochtar ainglí is tréine i gCathair na nGrás Ag cumhdach an ti seo ‘s a mhuintir thabhairt slán. I save this fire, as noble Christ saves;
Mary on the top of the house and Brigid in its centre;
the eight strongest angels in Heaven
preserving this house and keeping its people safe.)”6
These days it’s not really possible for most households to keep a flame burning all year round, if at all. As a result, the ritual becomes more symbolic, something to be done as you go up to bed and make sure all the lights and appliances are switched off, for example. The following rune is just one example of a smooring that was recorded by Carmichael. I tend to visualise the sacred three as being the gods, the ancestors and the nature spirits: Smooring the fire

Romania
Sweeping
In Romanian lore, the besom is a potent object which becomes truly magical at special occasions. For example, for Marina’s Day which is celebrated in Romania on July 17, mothers celebrate Marina, the protector of the souls of dead children, by crafting brooms with bristles made out of Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) and offering them to each other alongside flowers, corn, and chicks, and they keep the brooms which they use to sweep their homes and yards. They believe that these special brooms not only sweep away the dirt, but also bad luck and spirits such as the strigoi. Strigoii, which are believed to mount the brooms of the villagers to go to their nocturnal gatherings on the nights of Sângiorz (April 23) and Sântandrei (November 30), were unable to mount the brooms made of Wormwood. The Wormwood broom is also used by the Romanian people to bring someone back home, to sweep away evil forces, and even illness by sweeping around the ill. The broom is also a potent tool against Muma Pădurii (the mother of the forest). For this, the broom of the witch or the disenchantress or the broom of the mother whose child is haunted by the mother of the forest is used during a disenchanting ritual by sweeping the entrance to the home or by placing it next to the child’s bed. In all the spells and charms where the broom is used to repel something evil, the disenchantress or the witch always says to said evil to leave and go far away “because I will sweep you with the broom” (“Că eu cu mătura te-oi mătura”) otherwise.

Reocan From Proto-Germanic *reukaną, whence also Old Frisian riāka, Old High German riohhan, Old Norse rjúka. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/reocan#Old_English

Smooring, therefore – a Scots word usually translated as ‘smothering,’ but perhaps more accurately ‘subduing’3 – was a process by which the fire was dampened down so it would not need tending, and therefore could be left safely alight during the night. In Ireland, it was said that the Good Folk would be displeased if they arrived at a house during the night to find that there was no fire for them.4 In Ireland, a charm such as this was said as the fire was covered with the ashes: “Coiglim an tine seo mar choigleann Críost cáidh; Muire ar mhullach an tí, agus Bríd ina lár; An t-ochtar ainglí is tréine i gCathair na nGrás Ag cumhdach an ti seo ‘s a mhuintir thabhairt slán. I save this fire, as noble Christ saves;
Mary on the top of the house and Brigid in its centre;
the eight strongest angels in Heaven
preserving this house and keeping its people safe.)”6

2020.06.14 21:09 Potatoedemons Update: I (23f) found out my entire family lied about who my father is

I will put my original post down first that had one update then put my latest update down.
I'm sorry if anything is spelled incorrect it's late for me and very tired emotionally. I've gotta keep a few things out incase anyone I know read this aka my family.
An old family friend was giving me a ride home last night, she is much older than me and babysat me and my brother. Well I was talking about our bio dad and she got this look on her face in confusion. Then she told me she thought we didn't have the same dad. This confused me cause my mom NEVER talked about any guys except our dad she saw during our conception. They were on and off though. My mom tells me about the guys she dated and I'm the kid that know the family secrets. My sibling isn't understanding and can be an ass about sensitive subjects.
She told me the age my brother was and described the man. Matched age wise, I honestly sound alot like this guy in the simple description she gave. It took me until this morning to go into some sorta manic panicy episode. Basically I was freaking because a ton of things I never thought were odd now sound odd about my bio dad being the same as my brothers.
-He always wanted a girl but didn't sign my birth certificate I though it was bc I was born when he bailed on us. I was also told it was easier to just not fight for child support
-He only tried to contact my brother I only know of one time he called I was under 10 and was very upset bc I wanted to hear his voice. I was told he wanted to visit my brother.
-None of his relitives are fb friends with me but with my brother Now I never sent one to any of them but the last name is VERY unique so I can find them easily. My mother says they don't talk to him anymore though so don't need to bother. I'm only interested in getting a look at the man tbh.
That's all I can think of at this moment but I am in contact with the old family friend and I do plan to find this man if I can. I need to know if it's true and why my mom lied bc I can honestly see her doing it. I think if it is he had a wife and she was afriad of loosing me, but if it is true idk if I wanna be in her life anymore. To lie so long, maybe she believes it now herself??
I do plan on saving for a dna test and using it on my niece. But they are like $100 at the least. I won't confront anyone unless I have physical proof. Any help in this it greatly appreciated on tests to look at.
Tldr: Astronomy said June 2020 was gonna be shit and it sure is.
UPDATE: Heres an update of what I've learned. I wanna thank you all for commenting I'm glad I could vent here.
So this man lets call him Tennis lol. Well he's probably my dad, which I'm happy about. I also lowkey run in a similar groups as my apparent uncle and have used that to get someone I consider a father figure to help me. This way they know what I'm doing isn't out of malice. I do plan on getting a DNA test but if he doesn't want to be in my life after I'm ok with that. I grew up without a father and I can live without one. It's the bold lying my mother did that hurts the most.
On the why I'm testing my niece here's why. If I test my niece and me that'll show if I'm her full aunt or just half. I know a few people asked why and it's a way to test without having my brother freak out on our mom before I'm ready. From what I read 25% is full and 12.5% is half. I'm not telling anyone until I get physical proof though. I must say the one pic I did find of him I can say we do look similar. I've got the same dorky ass smile as him lmao.
(This next section is me venting I'm trying not to cry lol)
Now onto a few things that happened before I was born it's the story I got from the family friend. This will make you pissed probably so you've been warned. My mom screwed the pooch, this man wanted to MARRY her and she choose a literal bum of a man instead. She had a toddler and even if I wasn't his he still wanted to be there! He WANTED to be my dad! I could have had a dad and yeah they probably divorced but I would not have grown up in a heatless house in Pennsylvania! I wanted a dad and it HURT knowing my dad never wanted me, but I had mom... Now I don't have either....
TLDR: Tennis was the summer sport I learned before joining marching band
This is my latest update and may be the last for a bit as while it's good emotionally for me I need to focus on getting my life together to move out.
My family knew who my bio dad was, I confronted my mom who I believe is trying to gaslight me. She says I forgot he existed and she never corrected me. I first believed her but now see how dumb that is. I was venting to someone who I believe either snapped at my brother or showed him the messages. Currently I'm a waitress at a restaurant that is the equivilant of a manager there. He threatened to fire me over it, which I know is illegal in the US. I've never spoken about my issues at work and I rock as a waitress
Emotionally I'm done with them, my mother is siding with my brother. She was telling me to just move out and since I hate them all so much. I don't hate them I'm hurt beyond any pain I've felt in YEARS. My neighbor had to put her in line last night when this all happened. I honestly was becoming very suicidal mentally and thought about standing in front of a train last night since they wouldn't be able to stop and it'd be quick. I still am a little but then they could spin it for people to pity them. I don't want that I want people to KNOW what they did. That shame they feel they should feel bc it's a shit thing to do.
TLDR: Brother is threatens my job bc I'm venting outside of work. Mother was put in line by neighbor when she agreed with him and I was hysterical last night.

2020.06.11 01:27 ImagineUsingRedditxD I'm new to dating, I'm sure this is common but I also don't know how to approach it

I'm new to this subrreddit so I'm not so sure how this stuff goes. Anyways. Im new to the dating scene and am relitively young. I decided to ask a girl out, she gave me her number and we went on a date. Covid happened and we are unable to meet up. We still chat often but we can't really meet up so we are going through the process of getting to know each other online. I have no idea how relationships work so. I'm scared once we do meet up again after a long time, we will already know everything about each other and there will be nothing to talk about so I'd go from someone she is considering dating ( we already went on one date) to just friends because of it. Any advice?

2020.05.22 03:15 LetsRead_YouTube Scary Camping Stories-#4

I’m not really sure who came up with the idea first, but by days’ end, we’d planned the destination and date. Although, I’d been camping many times before, I’m almost positive neither Chuck nor Glenn, ever had. They had come into the family late in life and my real dad had already died by then. He had been the guy who loved camping. My stepfather, not so much. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great man, but the outdoors has never been his deal. The list of supplies needed for the trip, was compiled and followed to the letter, including the 4 cases of beer, perhaps the most important of all goods. We’d loaded up and were ready to leave at dawn the next morning. As we headed out, we had no idea of what lay ahead of us, and how it would affect our connection to one another, a connection we once believed to be unbreakable. The three-hour drive was uneventful and quiet. I was pleased to see how dry the surroundings were. Fire starting, while not hard for me, wasn’t my strong suit and I knew neither of my brothers had ever burned more than a cigarette. I brought along some lighter fluid just to be safe, although I never ended up needing it. While I worked on the fire, Chuck and Glenn, put the knowledge they had learned watching YouTube videos, to use, setting up the tent. I had purposely got the easiest tent I could find, yet it still took the better part of an hour before they had it up. The fire was already roaring by the time they joined me. I had buried the potatoes in the coals, prepared the steaks to be cooked, and was well into my second beer, by then. The steaks didn’t take long, and by dark, we were sitting down to a delicious meal.
After dinner, the real camping began. I had chosen to camp out in the middle of nowhere on purpose. I knew we’d become obnoxious and loud when we got drunk. More importantly, I like to make big bonfires and turn up my music loud. You can’t do that with others around you. That evening turned out to be a blast. We blew through 2 cases and didn’t pass out until dawn. It was something I’d needed to do for a long time. Despite the hangover, I resolved then and there, it was something we were going to do much more often. When I finally drug myself from my sleeping bag, it was well past noon. Chuck and Glenn were already awake, sitting next to a cold fire. They both had a beer in their hand and looked happy to see me. I asked them what was up with the fire and Chuck mumbled something about not being able to get it relit. This made me chuckle. I walked over to the tree line and grabbed an armful of wood. When I returned, I set it down on the “dead coals” and blew onto them. The coals lit up brightly and the fire was roaring again with in a few minutes. Then, I went to the creek to fetch some water. The look on their faces was priceless. Chucks’ jaw was hanging open and I could tell Glenn was aching to ask me how I did it. While I waited for the water to boil, I cooked up a large mess of eggs and potatoes and we ate breakfast with a cup of coffee. Once I had eaten, I was feeling much better and suggested we go fishing. We didn’t make it back to camp until almost dark. Unfortunately, no one had caught anything we could keep, but I could tell Chuck had already caught a good buzz. I cooked what was left of the steak and after, we set to finishing what was left of the beer. This evening was much tamer than the one before. I didn’t want to make a big fire, it would only be harder for me to put it out completely before we left for home.
Most of the night, the three of us talked about unimportant things like girls and work. Around 2 in the morning, we decided to turn in, the beer long being drunk. My last memory was Chuck going out to take a leak. He had drunk a lot more than the Glenn or I. He fell several times trying to get out of his bag, but eventually made it out of the tent. I must have passed out just after that. The next thing I remember, the sun was already beginning to shine through the trees. I had to piss like crazy, so I fumbled my way to the zipper, trying not to wake the other two up. As I unzipped the tent, a weird burning smell, similar to burned meat, hit me. I figured one or both of the guys were already up and burning our breakfast. I looked behind me and only Glenn, was still asleep. Chuck must have been the one cooking, and he was terrible at it. I crawled out with a smirk on my face and a smart remark for him. I looked up expecting to see my brother burning food but was met with a sight far more serious and horrible than I could have ever imagined. The fire was burned out and Chuck was nowhere to be seen. The dawn was still too dim to make out the large object laying across the dead coals. I walked up, within a few steps, and was hit fully by the burning smell. Then, all of a sudden, it hit me what I was seeing. Chuck was lying face down across one corner of the cold fire and he wasn’t moving. Without a second thought, I grabbed his body and rolled it over. All I could see was black and smell the terrible burning. I began yelling for Glenn and when he didn’t answer immediately, I ran into the tent and shook him. He was reluctant at first but when I yelled, “Chuck’s f---ing dead”, loudly in his face, he jolted upright and asked me to repeat it. All I could do was point toward the remnants of the fire and the horrible vision that the sun was making clearer by the minute.
He flew from the tent in one quick motion and came almost face to face with the charred body of our dead brother. I stood behind him, and silently with my eyes closed. Glenn fell to his knees and started wailing. At that second, I wanted to be anywhere but there. The sound of Glenn’s haunting wails and the horrid smell permeating the air, was worse than any nightmare I could have ever imagined. A cold breeze was blowing across me and that was when I first realized I had pissed myself. It didn’t matter though. With every second, the sight became clearer and I was too terrified to open my eyes. This was not the way I wanted to remember Chuck. I eventually crawled back into the tent and started crying myself. This continued for god knows how long, until I figured I should call 911 and let them know what had happened. They arrived about half an hour later. When the coroner left with his body, I summoned up the courage to come out. Glenn was speaking to one of the officers. The smell was still so bad, I began retching and retreated, back to the tent. Soon after, another officer joined me inside the tent. We talked about the trip and events of the night before, nothing in particular. He left about 20 minutes later with the remaining officers. I began breaking down camp and Glenn soon joined me. As we worked, nothing was said between us. I moved as fast as possible, hoping to soon be away from the terrible smell of my brothers’ burning flesh. Looking back on it now, I acknowledge I may have looked a bit cold and uncaring. In my defense, I was the oldest and had the responsibility of notifying the rest of the family. I knew our mother was going to be crushed and I wanted to tell her before she heard it from the news. When it comes to Glenn, I can’t speak for how he was feeling or what he was thinking. No one has the right to dictate to another, how to handle their grief, especially in a circumstance such as this.
Telling Mom was as bad as I imagined. She always wanted a large family. When Dad died, she thought her dream was over. However, when she met my stepfather and he mentioned adoption, she was overjoyed. Chuck and Glenn were actual brothers, about two years apart, and in their early teens when Mom found them. Boys their age are usually hard to adopt out, but Mom had fell in love with them at first sight. I always considered them my blood, as did the rest of the family. Glenn and I stayed close to her for some time, knowing how hard Chucks’ loss was on her. This was the first instance I began to get the feeling Glenn harbored suspicions toward me. Nothing was said but I caught him watching me with his usual questioning look, many times throughout that month. As the months passed, more and more questions began to be raised, many more than I care to mention here. I had always assumed, Chuck had passed out or tripped and fell into the fire, killing him. He had been much drunker than us. However, when the results came back from the medical examiner, certain things were off. The bruises for instance. Chucks’ back was covered in them. The thing was, Chuck played Rugby with some guys from school and had for many years. Also, his skull was fractured. A worrying sign for sure, but even the doctor was forced to admit things like this happen in a fire. The skull bursts or cracks from the heat. Horrible facts to hear, I agree, but for some reason, they have cemented the suspicions in Glenn’s mind. No matter how hard I try to show him this is the wrong time to be apart, he’s convinced himself, I had something to do with our brothers’ death. I’ve had my own reservations toward Glenn and his relationship with Chuck. More than once, I saw them argue about something, but they stopped whenever I entered the room. Do I have my own suspicions? Yes, but now is not the time to fracture the family.
Our mother needs us more than ever, right now. If she became aware of the distrust between us, it would not only break her heart, it may just kill her. For the foreseeable future, I’m going to do my best to bring us back together. If not for our mom’s sake, perhaps Chucks’. On my own, I’m going to keep digging into the rift between the two brothers and if it led to Chucks’ death. Even if it yields some terrible truth that I may not want to be aware of, I owe it to him. After all, Chuck was my brother, too.

2020.04.27 10:57 lolgottem423 Budget gaming for under 700!! With a monitor purchase later (1280p 19inch 60hz tv for now)

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Mainly would like to be able to play current and upcoming games and enjoy the benefits of pc gaming. Warzone is my current fix. (LoL, cyberpunk looks great, Apex, mainly FPS and some RPG. Warzone looks to washed out and dull on this PS4 pro and mainly my tv. There is this white haze fog type stuff when I am outside in bright areas. After hours of messing with tv and PS4 settings I came across some streams and realized all consoles have a similar effect whereas the pcs were quite clear. More than anything I would say this build is dedicated to warzone and similar AAA upcoming titles.
(I ERASED :( THIS PART > MAX BUDGET
SO BASICALLY SINCE QUARANTINE I PURCHASED A PS4 PRO AND A 55-IN 4K TO PLAY WAR ZONE AND IT'S NOT WHAT I HOPED IT WOULD BE. RETURNING THE TWO GOT ME 650. SO FORSAKE OF SIMPLICITY WE WILL SAY $700 MAX
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
I could possibly order parts as early as tomorrow or if anyone suggest s monitoring prices for the next week or so I wouldn't mind.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
I have a mouse and keyboard and headset. No need for speakers. As far as a tower I'm hoping a friend will give me an old case. I know that myself could round up easily a couple different variants of old pre-built systems but obviously I am aware that they may not be universal. So with that said I really don't mind if it's pretty or not and have no problem with ordering a bare bones and minimum price one. As for the monitor this is where it gets interesting. Once I return TV all I have is a 1080p 19-in Sylvania LCD TV that is dated but works without issue. I'm not sure if I'm dreaming out of my budget but I know that FreeSync is the way to go now. So in the initial build of 700 including a monitor is not necessarily a priority since it will put a major dent in the actual performance of this build. I have no issue in using this 19-in for a few weeks until I'm able to get an appropriate monitor.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
United States Tennessee and I will have to check online but I can say that I am 99.9% sure there is not one within a couple hours of me. Now with that said I wouldn't necessarily rule out a couple hour drive if it was highly recommended.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
The mouse I have is a Logitech g203 prodigy the keyboard I have is a old Dell USB very generic. And the current headset that I have is a rig 500 series that I got for the PlayStation.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
To be perfectly honest with you I don't necessarily think that I'm qualified to answer that. I grew up with computers and am quite familiar with their systems and hardware. I guess it comes down to risk versus reward and what general consensus I would have from you fine people
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
like I said I grew up with computers but that does not mean I have stayed current or close to them. From what I understand SSD is pretty much to go to currently for gaming so from my understanding I would receive the best performance from the a SSD. As far as size goes other than that handful of games I said I really have no need for excessively large space or at least off the bat. I'm pretty far away from our router to be able to run a cable. Don't get me wrong I'm close enough that I get almost full Wi-Fi signal but just not feasible to be able to run a cord so Wi-Fi is a must. and obviously I guess for convenience Bluetooth would be a positive as well.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
If we could find a very very budget-friendly case I really don't have much of a preference. To me function weighs heavier than aesthetics but black and grey white are some of my favorites. My color tastes are such as clothing and random things mainly black grey charcoal white with maybe a single color accent.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes. The cheapest route
When all this started I planned to spend 100 bucks on a Xbox one to be able to play warzone after mobile gaming relit my passion. Well that turned into a 300$ PS4 pro investment... And then a 350 55inch investment. I wanted a pc from jump but figured it was way out of budget (and then I spent 650 lol). I got a budget 4k hdr tcl tv and CoD on it was mehhh because of the budget specs of the tv. The HDR was washed out and colors dull. So after research online I come to realize that that's the price you pay for a budget TV.
I would like to have the opportunity to improve on this foundation over the next year here and there. Now how to go about doing that I hope some of you fine creative folks can steer me in the correct direction as far as upgrades are possibly saving and building for a future goal of better than 1080p performance. I hope that I included everything that you guys would need to know I tried to be thorough but if there's anything I need to elaborate on please let me know or PM me and I'll be glad to answer any questions.

2020.04.15 04:34 moodyjudytakethekeys What is the most effective form of communication?

Excuse me if this isnt correct formatting, I've never posted to reddit before. So my boyfriend (finance?) & I have been together for three years now. We dated a little in high school & fell off & then relit the flame when he moved back into town. I knew at the beginning we had some basic communication issues. Simple misunderstandings could turn into a big fight real fast. Now fast forward to three years & we're still having the same communication issues, but we now have a baby. He's the talker. He wants to sit down & have a therapy session, as I like to call them, about everything. I don't fly off the handle everytime, but sometimes things get heated pretty quickly because I just know where this is going to go. Let me explain.. If I do entertain his therapy sessions & keep my calm, we talk in circles & I mean that, literally circles. We get off topic, get back on topic, try to come up with a resolute, & end up right back in the same place as we were before. I find myself being at a loss for words a lot of the time. He gets angry because I'm not communicating, but it's like i have the monkey banging the symbols in my head. There's no thought process at that time, which leads to the anger. I will eventually blow up from feeling like I'm being mentally harassed. So what are some tips on communicating & actually finding a resolution?

2020.02.25 22:27 NerdOfLegends21 Advice: LL Partner w/ Medications, Sexually Inexperienced

I've been in-and-out of this page reading stories from others about all different types of experiences to try and help myself with my situation, but, I'm young and unexperienced.
I didn't begin experimenting sexually with myself until we started dating. I lost my virginity to him - which in turn created it's own little dynamic for my feelings towards him - Essentially locking myself into this relationship with him has now caused me to feel extremely sexually-inexperienced.
My partner and I (both M) are late 20s, living together and dating for 6 years. Typical story of starting out the relationship strong; more sexually active, lots of playful touching, etc. He's always been on x-medications (lifetime thing) that can effect his sex drive and I completely understand that. About 16 months ago is when we started... When we stopped really being sexually intimate with one another. Jerk-offs and BJs are what we changed to after the sex stopped.
Over time he started to push back against even the small gestures: Hand on his leg, wanting to hold hands, gentle kisses throughout the day in passing.
He never initiates sex, or anything sexual. I couldn't tell you the last time we both got off together, or that he's even helped me get off. IMO, the fact that he can jack-off alone frequently and wants nothing to do with me sexually tells me he has a decent sexual drive enough to be able to jack-off as much as he does. To me, it sounds like I'm treating myself like shit in this relationship and it's time for me to take care of myself.
What. Do. I. Do.
Have you addressed it in the past?: Yes, I have, on multiple occasions. It's the response that he just isn't sexually active, or this or that, but the jerking-off is what kills me.
Have you done anything to spice up the bedroom?: I've read books, checked online, bought sexy underwear. Nothing has relit his spark for me.
Open relationship?: "He has a toy that he doesn't want to use, but will refuse to let anyone else have it."
I love him as a person, truly, but, within the past 4 days or so my mind and gut has told me to back off (all thoughts I've had for a few weeks now). To go spend my time by myself (self-care! <3) or to find someone who can appreciate me and help me grow as a person in that way. Please know that I do not want to come off as a sexual little deviant, but with my lack of experience sexually... His lack of wanting to do anything sexually... My young age... UGH.
I appreciate you for taking the time to read this word vomit.

2020.02.24 21:47 10YearSecurityGuard Will being Homeless hurt my Visitation?

I moved from Oxnard, CA to Los Angeles, CA to pursue better employment opportunities. Sparing the long story, despite working full time I was unable to make rent, so I made the decision to move East LA for chepaer rent and more job opportunities. I Used to live about 13 miles from my son. Now I "Live" about 26 miles from him. I am 30yo and been working with the same company over 10 yeas My son is 8yo and is Autistic, although relitively functioning. (General ed with an aide.)
In the Interm, I made the decision to live out of my car so that I could pay off credit cards and get out of debt left from the divorce. Which I successfully did about 1 week ago. I still don't have enough saved to get a place and will likely have to take a pay cut to get my foot in the door of the maintanence/engineering industry. The plan was to get a new job in the industry and budget based on my wage there in order to figure out what I can afford as far as an apartment. I have currently been in my car for 4 months and expect probably 2 more.
VISITATION: I current have visitation every other weekend with my son for 2 days and nights. We spend the those weekends at my granparents house which is a place he frequents and is VERY comfortable in. He has everything he needs. My ex recently petitioned to take away my visitation but did not cite a specific reason in the order aside from the fact that I had to work Christmas day which was my day to have him and thus had to get a babysitter while I was at work. We have a date set for mediation.
QUESTION: Can my current status of living out of my car be enough to take away my weekend visitations even though when I have him he has a comfortable familiar place with toys, his own bed, shower, food, locks on door, etc.? I have never been late or missed a visitation.
Can provide more details if needed.

2020.02.11 03:00 ArchipelagoMind Instead of going to jail convicted criminals are 'free' to go, but must videostream their daily activities to the public. It's a new punishment system which trades incarceration for privacy.

Original prompt here.
----------
The usual text at the end of the job advert.
Those on streaming release may not apply.
Pippa closed the posting, and read the next. She had been out of prison for a month now, and she was getting increasingly desperate for a job. The floor an old cousin had gifter her to sleep on didn’t allow for much sleep, and she was eating only leftover out-of-date food the cousin wasn’t using. She needed money.
But a little over half the jobs forbid streamers from applying. Another quarter would quickly realize it as soon as she walked in for the interview.
“Oh, you are on streaming release? I’m sorry, we can’t allow cameras into the store.”
The only jobs available were those where privacy or secrecy weren’t a concern. Anything customer facing, or dealing with company information, or that would show the dark behind-the-scenes world, were inevitably off-limits.
There was a beeping noise from her wrist. She looked down at the smartwatch issued to her by the prison. Saturday. 6pm. Time for the Q&A.
She opened up the laptop engraved with the prison’s logo and opened up the chat application on the screen. The small bar in the bottom right-corner lit with a bright red.
You’re viewing figures this week were 55% of the expected target. Be sure to work harder to maintain your privileges.
She sighed. She knew she needed a following, but finding one wasn’t easy. Her life was hard, but she wasn’t homeless. It wasn’t filled with family drama. It wasn’t weird or unique. She wasn’t unique. The top streamers talked about grudges to settle, or would shout and scream at the camera. But that wasn’t her, she wasn’t… entertaining.
The chat box on the screen opened up, and her face appeared on the screen in front of her.
“Hello everyone. Welcome to another Q&A. I’ll be here for the next hour answering your questions about my journey back into society. Ask me anything.”
This was part of the bargain. One hour, every week, facing the public.
Pippa read the chatbox. There weren’t many questions, it was mostly just vitriol.
Kendall264: This is what you get for what you did you piece of shit.
HangTh3m: Glad you’re suffering. You make the mistake. You pay the price. Justice.
PrincessPolly: You might stand a better chance of getting a job if you didn’t look like shit. Your skin looks horrible.
Kendall264: Right?!? Why do prisoners always look so ugly?
NewSimon: Hey Pippa, I watch you everyday. Honest question, do you regret what you did?
Well, it was a question, Pippa thought to herself.
“Hello NewSimon,” she read the username carefully. “I guess at the time I never knew what I was getting myself into. Not until it was too late. Of course I regret it. And now just because I was caught, but, because of what happened.”
It started with just hanging out with a couple of old friends from school. They encouraged her into a bit of petty theft. But when they wanted a bit more than candy stolen from the drugstore they elevated to taking things by force. They started stealing bags from strangers in the street. Then one of them started bringing a knife for intimidation. Then one day they used the knife on someone who wouldn’t give up their purse so easily.
There were some comments about she was stupid to not realize who she was hanging out with, how she was trying to dodge responsibility, how she deserved to suffer for longer for what happened. She tried to scan past those.
DjangoDjango: Hi Pippa. I still think your hot as hell. Wanna get a drink sometime?
Did she have to answer that question? She decided she had better give some kind of reaction.
“I’m glad you are enjoying the stream, Django.” She laughed awkwardly through strained teeth. Django would send her some kind of message like this every week. Although at least this time he resisted commenting on any particular part of her body.
The messages kept flooding in. Insults, jokes, memes of her face pasted with various captions, a couple of overly suggestive comments from a couple of male followers. Every so often there was a question.
Eventually the hour was up and she finished the chat, letting her face fall back to its natural frown.
A message popped up on the screen.
Your call this week attracted 23% of the expected viewership. Make sure to get more viewers next week!
She pushed herself away from the screen with a groan, her sullen face quickly relit with renewed heat and bluster. A bitter hiss escaped between gritted teeth as she walked out the small room, through the hallway, and into the evening air to cool down.
The sun had set, and a gentle breeze blew the first layer anger from her skin. She looked up at the sky as clouds wafted past a thin sliver of moon.
“Hey, Pippa.” A voice distracted her. She turned to see a tall man standing a few meters away from her. She looked down to see the baseball bat hanging from his hand. “I know your stream is struggling. Not getting the viewers.”
Pippa took a couple of delicate steps backwards, trying to create some distance.
“I can help with that,” the man said.
“How?” Pippa asked in a warm tone, trying to mask the nervousness.
“People want drama. They want criminals like you to suffer. I’m going to give the people what they want.”
The man started walking towards her. Pippa turned and fled. Her legs pumped hard and she screamed to try and release an extra burst of energy to escape the attacker, but she could hear the footsteps getting closer. There was a brush wood on her side. A small hit, not enough to hurt, but enough to tilt her, and to send her momentum into a trip, and a skid that dragged her hands across the asphalt.
She didn’t remember what happened next.
A beeping noise woke her a couple of hours later.
Her vision was blurry. Her legs ached, and she could feel thick bruises swelling on the back of her thighs. The side of her head was clammy, and touching her temple produced red-tinged fingertips. Her head rattled, and she felt like she wanted to throw up.
The beeping continued.
She pushed herself up to a seated position. She slowly lifted up her arm, muscles aching as they rubbed awkwardly against blackened biceps. The beeping grew louder as she brought her wrist up to her face. There was a new notification on the watch. She clicked it to stop the alarm.
Congratulations! You made today’s “best of”.

2020.01.17 07:40 NervousCake7 BreakUp Make Her See What She's Missing

So I'm in a situation where I've been dating this women for about 7 months but this women obviously still has feeling/loves her ex.... I don't want to go into much detail but the ex and her lives with eachother because she doesnt just want to kick him out. Recently me and the her decided to take a break and just be friends. Honestly i feel that this "break" is an opportunity for her to go relit the flame with her ex. She complains that her ex is a horrible person and abusive and crazy yet she puts up with him telling me that she will soon kick him out but never did. Me and this women work at the same job and sense we're friends, i give her rides to work. She tells me everyday that we will be together after he finally moves out and she loves me and want a life with me. I dont believe any of that. My question is what can i do to make her understand she's making a huge mistake. Do i date other women? Stop giving her rides? Ignore her? What do i do?
